Independent planning guide

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about using our commercial sign guides and planning calculators.

Cost and calculator questions

Are the calculator results contractor quotations?

No. Results are early planning estimates based on generalized assumptions and the values you enter. A site survey and written local quotation are still necessary.

Why are the price ranges broad?

Two signs with similar visible dimensions can differ greatly in construction, lighting, finish, attachment, engineering and installation access. Local labour and approval requirements also vary.

Which currency do the calculators use?

Several tools let you select a display currency. Any currency conversion is a static planning convenience, not a live exchange-rate service. Enter local supplier figures whenever possible.

Should I include contingency?

For early budgeting, a contingency can help cover unknown site conditions, revisions, access needs or items excluded from an initial price. The suitable amount depends on how complete the design and site information are.

Permits, installation and accessibility

Do commercial signs normally require permits?

Requirements vary by municipality, sign type, size, illumination and property. Landlord consent, planning approval, electrical permits or structural information may also apply. Verify the full approval path before fabrication.

Can a sign company handle the permit?

Some do, some coordinate only part of it, and others exclude permit work. The written quote should say who prepares drawings, submits applications, pays fees, responds to revisions and arranges inspections.

Does the site certify accessible signage?

No. Accessibility duties can involve sign location, contrast, finish, character size, tactile information, braille and mounting. Use applicable standards and qualified local advice.

About the site

Does the site sell signs or recommend sign companies?

No. It provides independent educational information. A company advertising on a page is not automatically endorsed or evaluated by the editorial team.

Is information entered into calculators uploaded?

The calculators are designed to run in your browser. The site does not require an account or intentionally transmit your project inputs to the publisher. General website and advertising technologies are explained in the Privacy Policy.
